On September 21, Barbara Haynes, market manager of Cumulus Providence radio stations, was named national Radio Person of the Year for 2012 by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) at the CMNH 2012 Celebration in Orlando, Fla.
The Radio Person of the Year award honors a radio station staff member who has gone above and beyond to support CMNH and their local hospital. It acknowledges Haynes’s eight years of dedicated service in helping to raise $5.5 million dollars through the annual radiothon to benefit Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Since 2005, Haynes and her team from 92 PRO FM, NEWS TALK 630 WPRO-AM, and LITE ROCK 105 have been integral to the great success of the radiothon. This April, more than 40 children with a wide range of medical issues took to the airwaves to share their stories, and the community responded by donating $611,312 to support vital pediatric care, family programs and leading-edge research at the hospital. The two-day event was broadcast live from the hospital for a total of 24 hours.
While Haynes was unable to attend the award ceremony in person, she was able to record a video to share at the event. In giving thanks to CMNH, she said, “There is a special bond formed by people who are united by helping children through health care. And I feel that raising money for Hasbro Children’s Hospital is part of who I am, and that I have learned through fabulous doctors and nurses and Child Life specialists that everything we do matters. It is my honor to serve the hospital and my staff and I remain committed to forever being trailblazers for fundraising.”
Haynes has been in the Rhode Island radio business for 30 years, starting soon after her graduation from the University of Rhode Island in 1981. She has been the market manager for Cumulus in Providence since 2003. She is very active in the Rhode Island business community and is on advisory boards for the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association, City Year Rhode Island, and multiple military initiatives.
Thomas F. Tracy, Jr. M.D., pediatric surgeon-in-chief of Hasbro Children’s Hospital, said, “Barbara Haynes is one of the greatest cheerleaders for Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and we are indebted to Barbara for her ongoing support of the hospital.” Haynes’s position on the hospital’s Advisory Council has led to long-lasting relationships with sponsors such as Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee Day and Alex and Ani Charity by Design.
On April 4 and 5, 2013, Hasbro Children’s Hospital will team up with Cumulus Providence radio stations and CMNH to host the ninth annual radiothon.
