Psychiatry Emergency Services

Psychiatry Emergency Services (PES) at Rhode Island Hospital provides emergency psychiatric evaluation and crisis management for adolescents and children, with linkages to treatment programs for needed follow-up care.

All emergencies are seen within two hours. PES is available for urgent interventions when other services are not available. Urgent referrals are seen within 24 hours.

PES runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Staffing includes psychiatrists, psychiatric clinical nurse specialists, psychiatry residents and social workers. The program is located adjacent to the Rhode Island Hospital emergency department. By sharing diagnostic and medical treatment capabilities with the most advanced emergency department and trauma center in the region,PES is uniquely able to assess and treat psychiatric and medical issues.

PES works closely with Gateway Healthcare, Inc. to create linkages to community-based treatment capabilities and also coordinates with Lifespan partner Bradley Hospital when inpatient care is necessary. PES communicates with referral sources and family members to provide efficient, quality care in the least restrictive environment possible.
