Our 12-week program includes evaluation, treatment and maintenance components.
We start with a thorough assessment of all the medical, nutritional and behavioral factors that may contribute to a teenager becoming overweight or obese. This first visit lasts about three hours.
During the visit, teenagers and their families or caregivers meet with a pediatric endocrinologist (a specialist who can help if the teen has, or is at risk for, diabetes); a registered dietitian, and a behavioral psychologist.
This team reviews all of the information provided and develops a series of personal recommendations on diet, exercise and lifestyle changes for each teen and family.
Depending on the individual issues of each teenager and family, we offer a range of treatment options. These include:
Weekly group sessions focused on a balanced diet, healthy lifestyle choices and supervised exercise. These group sessions are at the core of our program, providing adult and peer support, encouragement and positive reinforcement for change.
Individual or family follow-up sessions with any member of the treatment team to address questions or concerns about weight management.
Referral to bariatric surgery for appropriate candidates.
Important: Before being considered for surgery, teens will need to participate in a comprehensive lifestyle intervention.
Our program also includes a web-based maintenance program to provide social support and help teens stick with their new habits once the group sessions have ended.
